A military charity based in San Antonio surprised a local Boy Scout Troop on Tuesday with about $9,500 in donated camping equipment and a new trailer.
Troop 701 recently had its items stolen at Oak Hills Church on the North Side. Jeff Wells, president of Wish for Our Heroes, wanted to help the troop after learning it had military ties. One boy's father is serving in Afghanistan.
“The scouts are the future leaders of our country. It's important for them to understand at this age the value of giving back,” Wells said.
The new trailer is equipped with an anti-theft device, he said.
One of the scouts, Devin Dorsey, who is near completion on his work to become an Eagle Scout, is the son of Staff Sgt. Bill Christopher Dorsey, a guardsman in Afghanistan.
