Living all around us in South and Central Texas are a group of families who have sacrificed more than any of us can imagine. Gold Star Families have lost a father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, or other family member to military service. Although there is no formal tracking system for Gold Star families, it is estimated that the largest population of Gold Star Families in the United States, reside between Austin and San Antonio, TX.
Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams, one of two living Medal of Honor recipients from World War II, has dedicated his life to honoring Gold Star Families through his foundation. WISH for OUR HEROES founder Jeff Wells, Candy and Ed Martin (1LT Tom Martin, their son, was killed-in-action in Iraq, October 14, 2007), John Baines, and San Antonio Councilman Clayton Perry, have committed to building a Gold Star Monument in downtown San Antonio to honor South and Central Texas Gold Star Families. WISH for OUR HEROES has worked closely with the Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams Medal of Honor Foundation to design a Gold Star Monument specifically for South/Central Texas.
